Media Relations Executive (Sport)

Intro

Press Box PR, a fast-growing PR agency, is hiring a Media Relations Executive (Sport) to work in its sports team.


Reporting to the department leadership team, you’ll be pitching content to journalists and editors at a range of UK and international publications that cover various trending topics and a wide range of sports. 

From football to Formula 1 , cricket to rugby, WWE to MMA and everything in between, we are looking for someone with expertise and an interest in a wide range of sports. You will also be up with the play on sports culture both on and off the pitch, with an eye for trending topics and how to utilise them to create great campaigns and content.

You will have a keen eye for detail, with your finger on the pulse for relevant content that UK and international publications will want to receive.

You will have an extensive media contacts book, made up of journalists and editors that you will be confident in pitching content to across a variety of different sports, as well as liaising with them to generate feedback to enhance Press Box PR’s media relations.

From a media-first perspective, you will also have creative input on content including quotes from talent and organic content that Press Box PR produces, not just solely in the sports outlined above but also identifying where there are crossover opportunities in merging sport with our consumer department.

Due to the nature of the sporting calendar, this role will require frequent midweek evening and weekend work. There will also be the occasional demand for work during irregular hours where required.

PBPR is a market leader in the betting and gaming industry and works predominantly with brands in the space. However, the successful candidate will also have the opportunity to work with other sporting clients and on our brand, creative and sponsorship activations. 

The Press Box PR team has grown from 0 to more than 50 people in the space of five years and combines extensive journalistic experience with top PR professionals to offer a unique proposition in the market. 

Formed in 2020, Press Box PR has grown quickly to become a thriving agency working for a range of sport, consumer, B2B, retail and hospitality clients on digital and creative PR projects.

Press Box PR is based in Barbican, central London and operates a hybrid working model, meaning employees spend an average of three days a week in the office. 

The role

Requirements

  • At least one year’s experience as a sports journalist at a mainstream online news publication or in-agency with experience of working in sports digital PR
  • A thorough understanding of how sport and other relevant topics are covered in digital media in the UK and globally 
  • An extensive network of relevant journalist and editor contacts and an ability to grow your publisher network
  • An interest in and experience of working across a wide range of sports 
  • A great understanding of the sporting calendar to spot opportunities for coverage
  • Ability and creative flair to respond to trending topics to help our content team produce stories and research to secure media coverage
  • Ability to react creatively and efficiently to real-time news to generate coverage
  • Strong editorial judgement in sport and trending/SEO topics
  • Ability to create, where required, strong editorial copy to outreach to journalists
  • A willingness to proactively pitch to media publications and build media lists across a variety of sports and regions
  • Excellent written communication in English - other languages would be a plus

An added bonus

  • An understanding of SEO and link-building
  • Experience working in sports PR
  • Experience working on a national or regional sports desk
  • Qualifications relevant to journalism or PR (i.e., NCTJ qualifications)

Salary, benefits and perks

  • Salary: £26,000-£28,000 DOE

Press Box PR operates on an office-first hybrid model consisting of three days a week in the office, with another two days at home. The role may also involve occasional travel within the UK and beyond.
