EXCLUSIVE interview: Michael Owen’s predictions on England vs Argentina World Cup

PBPR: What are your memories of the 1998 FIFA World Cup and your wonder goal against Argentina?

MO: “It was a pivotal moment in a way. But you know, without it I still believe I would have had a very good career. It's just another great moment in the career that I had I suppose. But it was probably the moment that announced me to the rest of the world, which was quite unique especially at that age going to a World Cup at 18.

“So, it was fun memories and of course they don't come around very often these World Cups so you've got to try to make the most of them and obviously we've got another chance now.”

PBPR: What are your thoughts on England and their prospects?

MO: “I wasn’t so confident I must admit because I think the conditions are against us. It’s very hot at that time of the year in America I think probably there will be better equipped teams from that point of view.

‍

“We've obviously got some good players, and we obviously go there with a chance.”

PBPR: Where do you think England are in terms of another golden generation?

MO: “We're a good team. I don't think we're in a special golden generation or anything else like that. We've got a lot of good attacking players.

‍

“And I don't think we're especially better than we were four years ago. But then again, you don't necessarily have to be the best team in the world to win it.

‍

“In knockout football, you need a fair wind, and a bit of luck. I didn't think Argentina were better than France in 2022. France were the best team at the last World Cup.

‍

“So, you can win it without being the best team. And we're far from being the worst team, obviously. So we've got a chance!”
